Abstract
1-(5-Nitro-2-furyl)-2-X-ethylenes (X = Br, (+)N(CH3)3Br(-), SO2Ph) undergo substitution with 2-mercaptoacetic acid in aqueous medium to give S-(2-(5-nitro-2-furyl)ethenyl)mercaptoacetic acid which could not be identified. The rate constants of both consecutive reactions have been determined spectrophotometrically in a buffer of pH 5.0 at 25 °C.
