4. In ref.3 the ratio ammonia/nitrile 2:1 was used, which may not seem to be a large excess. However, the intermediate imine 2, which is the actual reactive species, is present only in very low concentrations. Therefore, the effective ratio ammonia/imine is much higher than 2:1.
