Abstract

The effect of ten electrolytes and eight nonelectrolytes on the structure of liquid water in a H2O-D2O mixture was studied by near infrared spectroscopy. The results are interpreted in terms of the disturbing or promoting effect of solute on the cluster structure of water. The standard enthalpies of the hydrogen bond formation and the structure temperatures of the solutions were determined based on the temperature dependence of the absorbances.
